The Growing Story

Coastal Regenerative Farming

What began as a neglected piece of land — littered with waste and overrun by weeds — has transformed into a thriving hub of regeneration and opportunity. Located in Fumbini on Mama Zero’s plot, this permaculture garden now sits at the center of a growing, community-led food system. What started as a response to urgent food insecurity — where every member of the Ocean Mamaz reported struggling to access nutritious meals — has evolved into a model for restoring both land and livelihoods.

The impact has extended beyond the Mamaz themselves. Through this work, the women have trained children from a local orphanage to establish and manage their own kitchen garden — turning food production into a hands-on learning experience. Today, the children actively tend the garden, harvesting vegetables every two days and building practical skills that connect them to the land, nutrition, and self-sufficiency.

At the coast, regenerative agriculture is not just about food — it is critical for ocean health. By improving soil structure, increasing organic matter, and eliminating chemical inputs, these practices reduce harmful runoff that damages mangroves, seagrass beds, and coral reefs. At the same time, by providing reliable, land-based income and food sources, the garden reduces pressure on overfished marine ecosystems — creating a direct link between healthy soils and healthy seas.

Mission

At the Ocean Mamaz Regenerative Hub, our mission is to unite coastal communities through permaculture and regenerative agriculture — building a system that restores land, strengthens livelihoods, and reduces pressure on the ocean. We train women, fishermen, and youth — including children from a local orphanage — in practical, nature-based farming techniques, supporting a transition from reef-dependent income to land-based resilience.

Through the production and sale of organic soil amendments such as compost, leachate, and coco peat, the Mamaz generate income that is reinvested into a shared community fund. This model not only sustains and expands the garden but also enables savings, small loans, and the growth of individual businesses — creating a scalable pathway for economic independence rooted in environmental restoration.

Vision

Our vision is to build a self-sustaining coastal ecosystem where communities thrive by restoring both land and sea. As a core pillar of the Reef to Roots initiative, the Ocean Mamaz Regenerative Hub connects marine conservation with regenerative agriculture — creating a seamless system where healthy soils support healthy oceans, and diversified livelihoods reduce pressure on fragile reef systems.

We envision a scalable model rooted in Fumbini and expanding across the coast — from Mama Zero’s permaculture garden to the orphanage kitchen garden and the growing papaya plantation established in 2026. In this system, women, fishermen, and youth are not only participants but leaders — equipped with the knowledge, tools, and financial systems to nourish their families, generate income, and steward natural resources for the long term.

This is more than a garden — it is a living blueprint for circular, community-led regeneration, where environmental restoration and economic independence grow side by side.
