At the heart of Kilifi’s coastline lies a shared hope for the future—a future where thriving reefs mean thriving communities. On November 21, our fishermen are heading to Kuruwitu Conservancy and Welfare Community Based Organisation, a remarkable marine protected area that stands as a beacon of what’s possible when people and the ocean work together.
This visit isn’t just a journey—it’s a chance to see how conservation can breathe life back into the sea and strengthen the livelihoods of those who depend on it.
Kuruwitu: A Story of Renewal
Kuruwitu wasn’t always a success story. Years ago, it faced the same challenges as Bofa: overfishing, pollution, and dwindling marine life. But through the creation of a marine protected area, the reef found its resilience. Fish stocks began to recover, biodiversity returned, and local fishermen discovered a better way forward—one that honored both their traditions and the health of the ocean.
Seeing this transformation firsthand, we hope our fishermen will feel inspired to safeguard their local fisheries.
A Vision for Bofa Beach: Marine Protected Area
The waters around Bofa Beach tell a familiar story: hardworking fishermen, fewer fish, and a community in need of new solutions.
Our hope is to explore how Bofa Beach could benefit from community-led initiatives inspired by Kuruwitu’s success—fostering marine conservation and sustainable livelihoods in a place where marine life flourishes, and families find security in their future.
This is just the beginning of a larger journey. With your support, we can turn this vision into reality.
How You Can Help: Join Us on Giving Tuesday
On December 2, we’re launching a campaign to help support. Donations will help us:
Explore community-led initiatives for marine conservation at Bofa Beach.
Develop alternative food security projects, like community gardens and innovative coco peat production.
Provide resources and training for sustainable practices that benefit both the ocean and its people.
Your support can make this happen. Together, we can protect Kilifi’s reefs, empower its fishermen, and ensure the health of our oceans for generations to come.
Be Part of the Change
This isn’t just about protecting fish stocks—it’s about protecting the heart of a community and the future of our coastline. Stay tuned for updates from our Kuruwitu visit, and join us on Giving Tuesday to make a difference.
