Located in Bofa, Kilifi, Nyota ya Asubuhi, meaning “Morning Star”, is an orphanage that provides care, protection, and guidance to vulnerable children and young women within the community. It is a place where hope is restored and futures are shaped through compassion, education, and collective support. At Ocean Sole, we believe that true conservation goes beyond protecting marine ecosystems, it also means uplifting the coastal communities that live alongside them. One of the ways we put this belief into action is through our continued support of Nyota ya Asubuhi.

How Ocean Sole Supports Nyota ya Asubuhi
Ocean Sole supports Nyota ya Asubuhi through a combination of welfare support, education, and sustainability-focused initiatives, all aimed at improving quality of life and building long-term resilience.
Monthly Meal Support
Once a month, we spend time at Nyota ya Asubuhi by sharing a simple meal together. The children enjoy a plate of rice and beef, popularly known as pilau in the Kenyan coast, and for many, it’s a moment filled with laughter, conversation, and smiles. The meal brings everyone together and serves 104 children, making it less about the food itself and more about the sense of togetherness and care shared during the visit.

Understanding the everyday challenges young women face, we offer monthly menstrual hygiene support to 50 ladies at Nyota ya Asubuhi. This simple but meaningful support allows them to focus on learning, growing, and enjoying their daily lives with confidence, comfort, and dignity.

Marine Conservation Education
As a marine conservation organization, we engage the children in marine conservation education, focusing on:
Sea turtle conservation
Marine animals
The importance of protecting oceans and coastal ecosystems
These sessions nurture environmental awareness and inspire the next generation of ocean stewards.

Promoting Food Security Through Sustainable Agriculture
To strengthen food security, we constructed a garden shade at the orphanage, where vegetables are grown to supplement meals.
In addition, Ocean Sole facilitated training on:
· Compost making
· Biochar production
· Environmentally friendly pest control methods
These skills empower the orphanage with sustainable farming practices that support both nutrition and environmental conservation.
This agricultural training was made possible through the support of Ocean Sole Mamaz, one of the community groups supported by Ocean Sole. Their involvement demonstrates the strength of community-driven solutions and shared learning.

Nyota ya Asubuhi continues to shine as a morning star in Bofa, guided by care, education, and sustainability. Through partnerships and community involvement, the orphanage is building a future where children feel supported today and empowered for tomorrow.
