HAPPY EARTH DAY, 2026!
Working with the children of Nyota ya Asubuhi has been a truly rewarding experience—filled with learning, laughter, and meaningful impact. Through a series of activities held on different days, we created opportunities for the children to connect with both their environment and practical life skills in a hands-on and engaging way.
One highlight of our time together was a beach cleanup along the shores of Bofa. With gloves on and sacks in hand, the children eagerly took part in restoring their coastline, showing remarkable enthusiasm and teamwork. By the end of the activity, they had collected an impressive 116.1 kilograms of waste, a powerful reminder of both the challenge of marine pollution and the impact of collective action.

The day didn’t end there. After the cleanup, we shared a warm and joyful moment over a meal of pilau, a dish deeply rooted in coastal culture. It was a time to connect, laugh, and celebrate the children’s efforts. We also took the opportunity to support the young ladies by providing sanitary towels, helping promote their health, dignity, and confidence.

In a separate session, the focus shifted from the ocean to the soil. Under the guidance of Delila, a dedicated mama from Ocean Sole Mamaz, the children were introduced to vermicomposting for their garden. This interactive session demonstrated how organic waste can be transformed into nutrient-rich compost using earthworms.

From preparing the composting materials to learning how to care for the worms, the children were fully engaged and curious. It was inspiring to see them embrace the idea that waste can be turned into something valuable. This initiative will directly support their garden, improve soil fertility and contribute to sustainable food production.
Together, these moments reflect a bigger vision—nurturing a generation that understands and values both marine and terrestrial ecosystems. By combining environmental conservation with practical skills, we are empowering these young individuals to become responsible stewards of their environment.

The impact goes beyond the activities themselves. It lies in the knowledge shared, the confidence built, and the seeds of sustainability that have been planted—ready to grow into a brighter, more resilient future.
