At OceanâŻSole, we believe that protecting turtle nests is as vital as clearing flip-flop waste from our shores. Thatâs why, in partnership with the KenyaâŻWildlifeâŻService (KWS) â Watamu, we launched the TurtleSafe Project in 2024 to defend nesting turtles and their fragile habitats.

Every night, along 2.5 kilometers of Kilifiâs Bofa Beach, our team of six Turtle Rangersâmany of them former poachers and fishersâpatrol under the gentle glow of red lights, which donât disturb nesting mothers. They mark every clutch of eggs, only moving those threatened by tides, and ensure hatchlings find their way safely to the oceanâs embrace. They also log vital data for KWS, remove plastic waste, and hold monthly community sessions to explain turtlesâ ecological role and practical ways to protect them.
In just six months, these guardians have:⨠Rescued 11 nestsâsaving 420 baby turtles⨠Converted poachers into protectors through hands-on training⨠Trained 120 community members on why turtles matter⨠Stood their ground, even facing poachers to save one nesting turtle on AprilâŻ4th.

Beyond their patrols, our Turtle Rangers know that healthy sea turtles sustain not just ecosystems, but also local eco-tourism and coastal fisheries. Theyâre living proof that when we invest in people, we invest in the planet.
Now, weâre dreaming bigger.
We aim to double our ranger team and expand patrols to 12.7 kmâprotecting hundreds more turtles each season. With your help, weâll also build a new coastal Education Hub to host workshops on conservation, sustainable fishing, and ocean-friendly livelihoods.
As we celebrate Turtle Week, we invite you to join this mission. Your support doesnât just save turtlesâit creates jobs, builds resilience, and fosters hope. Together, weâre not just cleaning up beaches. Weâre turning poachers into protectors, one clutch at a time.
